Since 2016, the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) has operated the world’s largest nutrient recovery facility at the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant in Cicero, Illinois.
Mwende Lefler, Managing Civil Engineer at MWRDGC came to the WEFTEC Live Studio to talk about both the reasons for tackling this project and how it has progressed over the last 7 years. The facility, in partnership with Ostara Nutrient Recovery Technologies, can recover as much as 2.3 million pounds per year of usable phosphorus. The process creates a high-value fertilizer product called Crystal Green®.
