During WEFTEC Connect, the forward-thinking initiatives of 65 water utilities were recognized for reimagining partnering and engagement, watershed stewardship, and recovery of resources such as water, energy, and nutrients.
This is the fifth year of the Utility of the Future Today (UotFT) program and saw the greatest number of applicants and honorees. Each honoree has received a Certificate of Recognition and/or a UotFT banner or a 2020 flag. While WEF and its partner organizations were not able to acknowledge the 2020 honorees in person at WEFTEC, this awards ceremony video shares their accomplishments.
The Utility of the Future Today recognition program celebrates the achievements of water utilities that transform from a traditional wastewater treatment system to a resource recovery center and leader in the overall sustainability and resilience of the communities they serve. The program was launched in 2016 by the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA), the Water Environment Federation (WEF), The Water Research Foundation (WRF) and the WateReuse Association, with input from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The application period for the 2021 awards will open in January. In the meantime, learn more about the Utility of the Future Today and see past winners.
