Michigan State University (East Lansing) microbiologist Joan Rose outlined some challenges that tomorrow’s global water sector will face: unprecedented population growth, unfamiliar pathogens, and inadequate water infrastructure.
In a new seminar format for WEFTEC 2017 — a series of short, informal presentations, dubbed WEFTalks — four prominent water leader recounted how influential mentors awakened their potential and helped shape their careers.
Drawing on mentorship examples from the early days of her career as a scientist, Rose argued that those challenges will be met if younger and more experienced professionals are able to collaborate and share knowledge.
“For all the young professionals here, know that the world needs you,” Rose said. “I believe we are at a tipping point. We cannot walk away from this reality. We cannot forget that what we do is so important to public health.”
